OBD mandated for 2010 engine control systems

A final rule has been issued that will require heavy-duty engine emission control systems be monitored for malfunctions via an onboard diagnostic system (OBD) similar to those that have been required on passenger cars since the mid-1990s. The Environmental Protection Agency rule (published February 24 in the Federal Register) applies to 2010 and later heavy-duty engines used in highway applications over 14,000 pounds and revises onboard diagnostic requirements for diesel highway heavy-duty vehicles under 14,000 pounds.
